Booking direct, via an OTA, or through metasearch — what's the difference, and when to use each

Their strength is one-stop convenience: compare room types, pay, keep your history, collect points, and there's always a rotating promo. What to watch: the first price you see may exclude taxes and fees, some OTAs' "recommended" sort is influenced by the commission a property pays, and the cheapest rooms usually carry non-refundable conditions.

Hotels pay no commission when you book direct, so many hand that margin back as member rates, upgrades when available, late checkout or friendlier cancellation policies — ideal once you've already chosen the hotel and want to be treated as a known guest. The limitation is that comparing prices across many sites yourself is tedious, so direct works best as the final check, not the starting point.

Metasearch doesn't sell rooms: its job is to pull prices from multiple providers into one page, then hand you to the provider you choose at their own price, nothing added.
